Using Methyl Bromide and Aluminium Phosphide (phosphine) gas for its operations, PCI is equipped to provide quarantine and pre-shipment fumigation of export commodities in bulk, liner, chartered vessels and sea-going containers at all ports and Inland Container Depots (ICDs). More than 25 PCI establishments all over India are registered and accredited with Directorate of PPQ&S, Govt. of India, as per the latest national and international standards (NSPM 11&12, ISPM 15) and are thus authorized to carry out fumigation of wooden packing material and affix the ISPM 15 mark. All our fumigation establishments have been authorised to carry out fumigation as per the latest AFAS-AQIS Methyl Bromide standard.

The art and science of fumigation is highly specialised and technical, requiring a great deal of knowledge, skill and experience. Fumigants are highly toxic gases and great consideration is given to safety, using the latest gas monitoring and detection equipment. PCI also offers fumigation of bagged commodities, warehouses, silos, containers and ship holds. PCI has its own vacuum chamber, has recently procured its own containers for custom fumigation and is the first operator in the country to have carried out fumigation in aircraft.

Why Fumigation?

Commodities such as foodgrains, oilseeds, pulses, extractions, spices, tobacco, textile, timber etc., which are major items in today’s export market, are highly susceptible to infestation from stored grain pests during storage and transit. This infestation can cause extensive damage. Also, the strict quarantine and regulatory requirements of various nations mandate a pest-free shipment. Fumigation (or the use of a gas in an enclosed space to kill pests) as a curative control technique is an indispensable requirement; lethal to all stages of insect development - eggs, larvae, pupa and adult, it not only kills live infestations, but also helps to check the spread of unwanted pests from one country to another.
